Vague Comprehensive Plan

Although the Weld County Code often cites the Comprehensive Plan as the basis upon which decisions should be made, the Comprehensive Plan is so vague as to be practically useless. Individual sections of the Plan contain direct conflicts and inconsistencies. Thus, Commissioners can interpret it to support virtually any activity in virtually any location.

Although one of the primary reasons for the Plan is to "protect the health, safety, and welfare" of the current and future residents of the County, this goal is completely undermined by the Plan's vagueness.

A strong Comprehensive Plan would support land use planning by identifying regions where specific types of activities would be allowed. Because the Weld County Comprehensive Plan is vague and does not do this, no such planning has occurred. As a result, activities are scattered throughout the County without regard to long-term impacts.
